BOSSE, Abraham (1602-1676) - Maniere universelle de Mr. Desargues, pour pratiquer la perspective. Paris: Pierre Des Hayes, 1648.   First edition of this important work by the mathematician and geometer Bosse. The latter dedicated himself to promoting the theories of his friend Girard Desargues (1591-1661), a precursor of projective geometry, considered by Pascal as 'one of the great minds of this time.' In this work, one of the fundamental theorems of plane geometry, Desargues' theorem on homologous triangles, appears for the first time. This theorem laid the foundation for the theory of homology developed by Jean-Victor Poncelet.   8vo (170 x 105mm). Engraved frontispiece dated 1647, engraved and typographic title, woodcut decorations, engraved illustrations, and 158 engraved plates, including one folding (lacking portrait, small wormtrack to lower margin of frontispiece, some light waterstaining and occasional browning). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (large restoration on front cover, some stains, and light wear).
