GERARD, John (1545-1612) - The Herball or General Historie of Plantes. [London: Adam Islip, Joice Norton and RIchard Whitakers, 1636].   Third edition of Gerard's work originally published in 1597 corrected and enlarged by Thomas Johnson who added 800 plants and 700 woodcuts.   Folio (333 x 215mm). Initials, headpieces and many woodcut illustrations (lacking engraved title and final blank, at the beginning there is a facsimile (?) leaf with the typographical information from the 1633 edition, restorations on first four and final leaves with loss, some tears sometimes restored sometimes touching text, engraving partially handwritten on M verso, 6Z6 with losses, some wormtracks touching text and engravings, waterstaining, some staining and foxing). Provenance: full-page anciently annotated on [par.]3 verso - Lidiay (ancient ownership inscription at 6R2) - Anthony Briant 1710 (ownership inscription on 6X3 verso) - bookplate with winged lion on front endpaper.
