TABERNAEMONTANUS, Jacobus Theodorus (1522-1590) - New und vollkommen Kräuterbuch. Frankfurt: Johannis Bassaei, Johann Dreutels, 1613.   Second part of the rich botanical work of the German doctor Theodor, a pupil of Hieronymus Bock (1498-1554), who called himself Tabernaemontanus from the name of his hometown Bergzabern. The volume focuses above all on the practical use of plants and is extremely rich in this respect. The beautiful woodcuts were partly original, partly based and updated on models by Bock himself, Fuchs, Mattioli and others. This edition is the first edited by Caspar Bauhin (1560-1624) and was met with great success.   Second part only (of two), folio (348 x 220mm). Engraved title, woodcut headpieces and initials, text in Gothic and Latin characters, many woodcut illustrations, seven of which are hand-coloured at pp. 138 and 835 (cropped title, first three leaves detached, marginal restorations on 2R5, marginal wormholes at the first and final leaves, without final blank, widespread browning and waterstains). Contemporary calf, gilt decorations on spine, red speckled edges (rubbing and chipping). Our copy is collated as follows and the text is apparently complete: )(.)(4, A-3F6, 3G4, 3H-4A6, 4B4, 4E6, 4F-4G4 (-4G4 blank).
