TROILI, Giulio (1613-1685) - Paradossi per pratticare la prospettiva senza saperla. Bologna: eredi del Peri, 1672-1683.   Internally a good and exceptionally complete copy of the first edition of the first and second part published in 1672, followed also by the first edition of the third part published in 1683. It is an important treatise on perspective finely and elegantly printed; the work has remained famous until today as one of the milestones in the history of theatrical scenography: it describes the conscious use of visual deception, the creation of greater depth through the oblique positioning of the wings as a common practice twenty years earlier of the perspective theorizations of Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709). It is with this work that Troili develops the architectural-perspective tradition established by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-1573), enriching it with technical improvements and more in-depth application systems, using a lively and didactic prose with examples taken from the daily practice of the workshop. His experience of perspective will be put to good use with unsurpassed success in the architectural and theatrical works of Ferdinando (1656-1743) and Francesco Galli da Bibbiena (1659-1739), both his pupils.   2 parts in one volume, folio (290 x 200mm). Woodcut arms of the dedicatee on first title, printer's device on second, numerous full-page woodcut illustrations within a phytomorphic border, woodcut initials (few occasional stains). Modern leather. Provenance: Antonio Lombardi, Estensi censor (1768-1847; there are other books on the market with the same stamp).
