[DE VOS, Maarten (1532-1603]) - Sylvae sacrae monumenta sanctioris philosophiae. Rome: Jean Turpin e Philippe Thomassin, 1597 - [LEGATO CON:] - Solitudo sive vitae patrum eremicolarum. Roma: Jean Turpin e Philippe Thomassin, [1589 -1602?].   An edition composed of expressive illustrations by the great Flemish painter Maarten De Vos, an admirer of Roman classicism. Both works are dedicated to Cardinal Alessandro Peretti, nephew of Sixtus V, and illustrate moments from the lives of anchorites and philosophers. In the classic Flemish engraving style, they depict monsters and fantastic animals in conjunction with saints and hermits in landscapes with a typically Northern European flavour.   4to oblungo (208 x 280mm). Elaborate engraved titles, engraved dedication within border, 29 engraved plates in the first volume and 29 in the second (titles with reinforcements and restorations, soiling and foxing). 19th-century quarter-calf, decorated paper covers, manuscript title on spine label (restorations at the upper margin, light wear). Provenance: occasional contemporary annotations.
