ALFIERI, Vittorio (1749-1803) - Tragedie. Paris: Didot Maggiore, 1787-89.   A copy in fine binding of the second and partly original edition of Vittorio Alfieri's tragedies, after the “sudicissimamente stampata” one in Siena in 1783. The following tragedies were published here for the first time: Maria Stuarda, La congiura de' Pazzi, Don Garzia, Saul, Agide, Sofonisba, Brutus I, Myrrha, Brutus II. Complete copy of the "Volume di scarto" bound together with volume VI printed by Didot in 1787, which left the insatiable Alfieri dissatisfied, who therefore decided to proceed with a further revision of the text. Volumes in elegant bindings in the Etruscan fashion invented by William Edwards of Halifax.   6 volumes, 8vo (220 x 135mm). Engraved frontispiece with the author's portrait (browning, spotting, small wormtrack at the inner margin of some gatherings in fifth volume). Contemporary calf, gilt Greek frame on covers enclosing a series of concentric frames with hot-stamped palmettes, gold frame and heat-stamped Etruscan vase in the central field, gilt decorations and titles on spines, gilt decorated dentelle, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (rubbing at joint, some restorations).
