Rouen: David Ferrand, Thomas Daré, 1641.   A volume in elegant binding with the arms of Madame de Pompadour, influential court woman under the reign of Louis XV, supporter of Enlightenment ideas and known for her passion for the arts and her rich library. Her portraits are also famous, in which she loved to be depicted surrounded by books. This work is a collection of dramatic stories of exquisitely baroque taste and historical subject.   8vo (160 x 102mm). Engraved frontispiece, woodcut headpieces and initials (waterstain at the lower corner of the first three gatherings, tear at leaf T1, tiny wormtrack on the lower margin of gathering Y not touching text, browning, foxing). 18th-century calf with the arms of Madame de Pompadour, rich gilt decorations and title on spine, red edges, marbled endpapers (light rubbing and wear to joints).
