HOSTE, Paul (1652-1700) - L'art des armées navales, ou Traité des évolutions navales - Théorie de la construction des vaisseaux. Lyon: fratelli Bruyset, 1727, ma 1697.   First edition, with the title of the second one dated 1727, of this widely illustrated nautical work which had considerable success, influencing French naval strategy in the 18th century. Hoste, a mathematician and navigator with twelve years of experience at sea, dedicated his work to the analysis of the practical limits of ship maneuverability, combining tactical instructions for combat with an accurate geometric approach. The practical applications of Hoste's theories are highlighted through the description of the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and other naval combats that occurred under the reign of Louis XIV. At the request of Admiral Tourville (1642-1701), an essay on naval architecture was also added to the text.   2 parts in one volume, folio (378 x 245mm). Contemporary bazzana, triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt decorations and title on spine, red edges, marbled endpapers (light rubbing and scuffing).
