Erfurt: Johann Heinrich Grosch, 1715.   First edition of the first comprehensive monograph on elephants, covering not only the anatomy and habits of the animal but also its fossil remains, symbolic attributions, and its role in society. The initial chapters focus on the anatomy of the elephant and the differences between the Indian and African species, while the subsequent chapters delve into the moral and religious virtues assigned to the animal. They also describe the significance of elephants in war, trade, and other aspects of human life. The work by the renowned Leipzig physician is illustrated with splendid engravings by the famous German artist Jacob Petrus.   4to (205 x 155mm). Engraved frontispiece, red and black title, woodcut initials, headers-and-tail pieces, 27 engraved plates (first leaves slightly shorter, marginal restorations, especially to the initial pages, slightly touching text and engraving on title and frontispiece, but rarely elsewhere, lightly uniformly browned, sporadic staining). Contemporary calf with blindstamped decorations on covers, gilt titles and decorations on spine, red edges (rebacked, wormholes and wear on rear cover). Provenance: Emile W.
