DUNS SCOTUS, Johannes (1265/66 -1308) - Quaestiones in quattuor libros Sententiarum Petri Lombardi. Circa creatione. Venice: Johannes da Colonia e Johannes Manthen, 1478.   A fine illuminated and annotated incunabulum of Duns Scotus' commentary on Pietro Lombardo's text, with wide margins. First leaf with a fine illuminated initial and rich floral decoration, the text, arranged in two columns, features initials and paragraphs with red and blue initials. Duns Scotus, eminent Scottish philosopher and theologian, studied in Paris and Oxford, where, having obtained the academic title of bachelor, he commented in 1304 the "Sentences" of Peter Lombard, a fundamental theological work in four volumes dedicated to the Divinity, Creation, to the Incarnation and Redemption and finally to the Sacraments. This volume contains the commentary on the Creation.   Second book (of four), folio (292 x 185mm). First leaf with large illuminated initial and an empty laurel crown, initials and paragraph illuminated in red and blue, leaf r8 containing the register bound after s6 (without blank a1, small restoration on upper corner of a2, wormholes on first two leaves not touching text, some waterstains, light stains on f3, marginal restorations at k4,5,6, marginal wormtracks from q9, small wormhole in the final leaves from s3 touching some letters, reinforcement at the lower corner of s3 and at the verso of s6 and r8). 18th-century vellum, marbled blue edges, manuscript title on spine (very light rubbing, lightly bowed). Provenance: several manuscript annotations in Latin written by a single hand in elegant humanistic style, contemporary or slightly later.
