GIORGI, Federico (seconda metà del XVI sec.) - Del modo di conoscere i buoni falconi, astori, e sparauieri. Venice: Gabriele Giolito de Ferrari, 1547.   First edition of this ancient and important work on falconry, rich in detailed information on the breeding and training of falcons, sparrowhawks, and goshawks, with notes on their feeding and care. The work is dedicated to Marquis Carlo Gonzaga, whom Giorgi appears to have served as a falconer, and at whose court falconry was practiced according to ancient traditions and was an important part of the family's favorite pastime: hunting. The treatise was highly successful, being reprinted many times during the 16th century and at least three times during the 17th century, and it was a crucial source for "The Book of Faulconrie or Hawking" by Turberville, the most well-known work on falconry of the 16th century.   8vo (157 x 103mm). Printer's device on title and at end, woodcut initials and decorations (without final blank, restoration to lower margin of title, some dampstaining, occasional light staining more frequent in gathering F). Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine (restorations, staining and slight losses, some wear). Provenance: M? (illegible ownership inscription on title).
