GALL, Franz Joseph (1758-1828) and Johann Christoph SPURZHEIM (1776-1832) - Anatomie et physiologie du systme nerveux en general, et du cerveau en particulier. Paris: F. Schoell, 1810-1819.   First edition, uncut, of the work which introduced the theory of "localization of cerebral function". Gall was the first to study the various areas of the cerebral cortex; he always claimed that the brain was made up of different parts connected to each other and that each of these parts had a precise function in the organism albeit in a rather fantastic form. "Introduced the theory of localization of cerebral function, although in a somewhat fantastic form. This pioneer attempt to map out the cerebral cortex according to function gave rise to the pseudo-science of phrenology. The work also contains some important additions to the knowledge of cerebral anatomy" (Garrison-Morton 1389).   5 tomes in 3 volumes, folio (535 x 352mm). Half-titles, engraved frontispiece with portrait of the author in the first volume, 100 plates in the atlas volume (some foxing and soiling, browning especially in the margins, first 4 leaves of the first volume in a slightly smaller format).
