TORELLI, Pomponio (1539-1608) - Rime Amorose. Parma: Seth Viotti, 1575.   A copy in exquisite binding and excellent state of preservation of this first edition of Torelli's work dedicated to Ersilia Farnese. "In the "Rime", there is a departure from the patterns of the Petrarchan Canzoniere and Torelli includes among his authorities both the Divine Comedy and the Decameron. While the dispositio of the compositions follows calculated architectures and numerological harmonies, the love narrative does not unfold from deviance to repentance, with the death of the beloved as a turning point. The phoenix/sun woman is consistently, for Torelli, a vehicle of elevation, in line with a Ficinian and Neoplatonic conception that seeks to reconcile with Aristotle and Christianity. However, in his philosophical poetry, the path of purification and ascent follows a spiral pattern, marked by ascents and descents" (DBI, Bondi 2019).   4to (207 x 145mm). Woodcut coat of arms of the dedicatee Ersilia Farnese on title and printer's device on verso and at the end, woodcut initials and decorations (occasional staining, some light waterstaing, and foxing). 18th-century mottled calf, titles on labels and gilt decorations on spine, red edges, marbled endpapers (minimal losses at lower end of the spine, losses to front endpaper possibly due to the removal of a bookplate, very light wear). Provenance: Morterra (bookplate on front endpaper) - De Marchi Guido (ownership stamp on front enpaper and on title).
