Naples: Moscheni, 1729-34.   A difficult work to find on the market in this first Italian edition of the famous "Philosophical Transactions" which contain various topics of science, medicine, geography, etc. Of particular interest is the large folding map of California described and illustrated not as an island.   5 volumes in 4 tomes, 4to (226 x 178mm). Half-titles, 38 engraved and folding plates including a map of California and part of Africa, 7 folding tables in the second volume; the number of plates seems to correspond to those described in SBN although there are some jumps in the numbering (lacking b1-b2 in the first volume with the end of the translator's note, restored tear to the mapf of California, small wormholes to the last plate of fourth volume, some occasional light foxing). Contemporary decorated boards backed in marbled calf with red labels, yellow bottom edge (extremities rubbed). The lot is sold as described and not subject to return. (4)
