FÉNELON, François de (1651-1715) - Les Aventures de Télémaque. Paris: De l'imprimerie de Monsieur, Pierre François Didot jeune [al colophon], 1785.   A genuine copy of the "belle édition faite pour contenir la suite des figures de Monnet et Tilliard" (Cohen). The work, that caused Fénelon's removal from Versailles for references to the autocratic reign of Louis XIV, was so successful and became so much part of the culture of the time that editions like this one were then printed with the patronage of the royal family.   2 volumes, 4to (340 x 250mm). Half-titles, additional engraved title dated 1773, woodcut vignette with French arms on titles, 72 numbered engraved plates and 24 summaries within an engraved border (lacking the author's portrait present in the digital copy of the BNF but missing in all copies on the market, light foxing and browning). Modern quarter-calf, gilt titles and decorations on spine, marbled endpapers (minimum wear). (2)
