CLUVER, Philipp (1580-1623) - Introductionis in universam geographiam tam veterem quam novam libri VI. Amsterdam: Joannes Paulus, 1729.   A fine copy with plates in contemporary handcolouring and containing the renowned map of America which still presents California as an island, of the most important geographical work of the 17th century, considered the first true work of modern geography. It is the masterpiece of the German historian and geographer Philipp Clüver considered the founder of modern historical geography.   4to (247 x 192mm). Allegorical engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title printed in red and black, 49 (of 51 called for in the index although in the copies on the market they are often less) engraved plates, of which 44 folding geographical maps in contemporary handcolouring, handcoloured map of the winds and 4 black and white plates (lacking maps of Sicily and "Italia antiqua Guillelmi de l'Isle", small tear restored on the verso of the plate "Graeciae antiquae tabula nova" touching the engraving, browning especially on the text pages). Contemporary Dutch vellum, gilt decorations on covers and manuscript title on spine (without laces, very light rubbing and staining).
