[TURCHI] - MENAVINO, Giovanni Antonio. I cinque libri della legge, religione, et vita de’ Turchi. [Venezia: 1548] - [LEGATO DOPO:] - GIOVIO, Paolo (1482-1552) - Commentario de le cose de Turchi. [Venezia]: s.n., 1538.   An interesting miscellany of two 16th-century works dedicated to the customs of the Turks. Menavino's work, in the first edition, offers in-depth details on the customs and religion of the Turks, with particular emphasis on the military information collected in the fifth book. Born in 1492 in Voltri (Genoa), Menavino was captured by the Turks and taken to Constantinople, returning to his homeland only in 1511. After spending years as a page of the Sultan Paiaxit, Menavino experienced the transition of power to Selim. Giovio's work, first printed in 1531, is here in its fifth edition.   2 works in one volume, 8vo (150 x 92mm). Title of Giovio's work within a woodcut border; woodcut initials in Menavino's work (marginal waterstaining especially in the first work, light browning). 19th-century half leather reusing parts of original spine, marbled covers, blue speckled edges (very light rubbing). Provenance: Convento de' Cappuccini di Bergamo (contemporary ownership inscription on tite of Menavino's work) - contemporary ownership inscription on titlle of Giovio's work.
