Venice: Francesco Barilleti, 1598.   First edition of this fundamental work for mathematics, richly illustrated and enriched by an engraved and folding plate depicting the moving square, which was engraved only for later editions and dated 1670. Ottavio Fabri is celebrated for having invented the "moving square", a geometric brass tool that allows to measure and transfer any distance onto paper, with practical applications in the astronomical, geometric and topographical fields.   4to (207 x 157mm). Engraved title, woodcut headpieces and initials, an engraved folding plate at end and many engraved illustrations, B1 and B2 bound before A3 (lacking A2 with the dedicatory to Francesco Gandino, light browning, occasional light foxing, waterstaining on the upper corner of the final leaves). Ancient later vellum, manuscript title on spine (a few little stains).
